Just Another Metallic Monday

If that title instantly makes you think of the Bangles, we should be friends.  I was pining to wear my new gold leather short boots, so I gave myself a good reason to in this week's Monday Style Prompt - Metallic Monday!  If you wore anything significantly metallic yesterday, you'll get what I'm about to say: you just gotta go gold or go home.  You can't put on gold boots and pretend like you're wearing your usual old black boots... And so I thought, what the heck, I might as well pair them with hot pink.
Aldo boots $7, skirt $7, sheer metallic polka dot Peter Pan collar top* $4.20 VV Boutique
Tights and cardi from my closet
*longest garment description ever

I first tried this cute short-sleeved top and boots with a black skirt and it just didn't seem like enough to support the boots!  Too boring!  Needed elements of spunk from head-to-toe!
My fab She Does Create "sword and shield" earrings!
Since the top is sheer, the under-layer can change the look.
I just so happen to have a pink tank that worked perfectly!

It was Pink Day in preschool on Monday, so I was basically doing TWO style challenges!
And if no one else, preschoolers thought my golden boots were da bomb.

Mondays are my crazy days with a standing commitment on Monday evenings with my two oldest kids.  So my "Day to Play" look was more like "work to evening!"  I just swapped in some denim and a black layering tank for a cleaner line.
Joe denim $2.80 VV Boutique

Two different staging locations for your viewing pleasure.
Oh and I also wore different lipstick.  I'm wild and crazy that way.

Here's a little secret: for my evening look I was wearing an awesome metallic belt!  No one could see it but I knew it was there and that made me happy!  But it deserves some time to shine so I might just have to get my metallic going another day soon!  I say, the more metallic the merrier!

Thrift Haul Saturday

CONFESSION:  Yesterday when I was tucking my vintage floral wool sweater into my pencil skirt, I ripped a hole in it.  Upon further inspection, the fabric was a bit weak in that spot OR it could be I'm an aggressive tucker.  In any case, when you lose a special piece, the only thing that will make it better is replacing it, so I HAD to go thrifting today.  I met up with my sis for an early birthday shopping date and SCORED!  Here are my hits and misses!

This pretty coat was in perfect condition and such a beautiful colour but alas, too small.
I posted it to Instagram with the hopes that it will go to a good home, a home that will send me a picture of it being happy.
Then I spotted a mustard toggle coat...
Sleeves too short.
Choking back tears, then...
A camel robe coat for $7.70!!!
Might be vintage, might be wool, is definitely fabulous!
SCORE!!
Next up, my search for cognac boots was fruitless but...
I found Bass penny loafers WITH pennies!
However, when I looked closely, the toes were in rough condition.
Since I'm not exactly hurting for footwear options, I left them behind but not without a sad embrace.
Fortunately, my woes were cheered by...
Leather flat-heeled gold metallic Aldo boots for $7!
I'm fresh out of golden boots.
As I was walking through the aisles giving these boots a test-run, I said to my sister:
"Large polka dot prints are on my radar," when I suddenly spotted...
Cardis are a great finishing piece but can be boring - NOT this one!  $4.90 well spent!
My red and pink ensemble today had me in the Valentine's mood.
First I found a boys' pink button up that I thought would be adorable on my daughter...
But because I want her to wear it, she refuses.
And so it begins..
I also found myself a pink GAP sweater.
It was cute and all, but considering my ample wardrobe, a piece has to have something special to make the cut,
so I left it behind.
My wardrobe would make a good reality show, case in point:
I found a piece to replace a similar one in my closet...
This $3.50 coral GAP belt is leather and totally adjustable.  The one in my closet is starting to crack.
"I'm sorry, you're no longer in the running for Nicole's Best Wardrobe."
I might wear that belt with this unique piece...
Oh. My. Word.
Sometimes you're just thankful that someone donated a piece rather than wearing it out.
Reminded me of a funny BuzzFeed Piece about thrifters.
I don't have any cat sweaters (yet) but...
I now have TWO heart-print sweaters!
That's my prerogative, so there.  Another $4.90 well spent!
Before my trip concluded, I found what I came for...

A gorgeous floral wool sweater for $9.10 - not vintage but an Anthro brand!
SCORE!
Just look at those colours!!

I also scored some books that I've been watching out for, a wool seal toque for my daughter and a very special piece that I'm keeping under wraps for now, to create dramatic intrigue!

CONCLUSION: This was a very successful thrift haul Saturday!  I replaced my sweater, added a coat to my collection (so I can survive a few more days of winter) and found several other pieces that add interest and fun to my wardrobe!  Can't wait to style them for Day to Play!  Are YOU going thrifting this weekend?  Need any metallic pieces for this week's Monday Style Prompt?  Bet you can guess what inspired that one!!

Day to Play

I've said it before and I will say it again: I live a life of glamour.  My Friday nights are wild and craaaaazzzzzyyyy.  As I type, I'm wrapping up the *fab* movie, "Agent Cody Banks" with my 3 kids and hubby, all of us in jammies and I'm thinking to myself how Sortilege goes better with cookies than wine, but maybe not white wine...?  The musings of a fashionista.  I digress.

February is all about from Day to Play!  I'm focusing on showing different ways of styling the same piece - whether that be for work to weekend or day-off to date-night!  Today, I wore a vintage wool sweater for a nice Friday off with my kids - it's Teacher's Convention which means there's no school while the teachers learn and I take 3 kids to a calm Walmart.  Win win...?  I digress.  My first look:
all VV Boutique

The pattern on the sweater is so gorgeous but the shape is so very vintage with the dropped shoulder, narrow waist, and, er, mock neck collar, so I added the white collar top to balance things out...
I think it helped!
I'm preppy and I know it.

But who's kidding anyone?  That nice white shirt is simply not that comfortable for momming around.  What I actually wore for my day is:
Black Miz Mooz boots and black tee from my closet plus a navy scarf $3.50 because

Now, despite not actually going on a date, I got dressed for one!  I'm not sure how exactly to make a mock-neck wool sweater sexy, but I tried.

A black pencil skirt never hurt anything.
Suede BCBG booties never hurt anything.
Hair not in a mom-ponytail and dangly earrings never hurt anything.

My husband happened to be sitting there when I was putting on my fake-date outfit and he was the one that suggested the skirt.  There is something inherently sexy about a pencil skirt.   At least that was the message I got from my hubby.  Wink wink.

So there you have it - two fake outfits, one fake date...
And one vintage sweater from day to play!

Thrifting Success Story

A couple weeks ago, I had a great time helping Kristen, a young rising professional, put together business casual looks with a rocker chic edge from pieces in her closet !  While we were at it, we made a thrift-hunting list and on Sunday, we hit VV Boutique intent on filling those holes in her wardrobe.  Kristen, unlike moi, does not love shopping.  Not even a little.  Yet she was a great sport and willing to try on anything!  Her efforts did not disappoint!  Just look at all her scores!

Metallic flats, leather Clarks MaryJane pumps and leather Bandolino flats, all in perfect condition!

It's always a good idea to shop the shoes first so you can wear the maybes while you shop to ensure comfort.  If you can't wear them, they're not a good deal no matter how cheap!  We also stopped by the accessories racks and found many staples - silver hoops, antique metal cuff and earrings, pendant necklace, statement tassel necklace, silver bangles...  Though we didn't catch them on film, these accessories will help Kristen follow the Rule of 3, add an edge and finish her outfits!  I made her promise to send some selfies so I could see them in action!  After shoes and accessories, we hit the racks...
Found just a *few* things to try on!

Though the selection of blazers was relatively small compared to my usual experience, Kristen still crossed off a couple blazers from her list including a basic black blazer...
The blazer was $3.50 after applying the 30% off from a filled donation card!
The lining is animal print, so to avoid clashing with this fab skirt, we tucked the cuff under then pushed it up!
Perfect condition perfect fit animal print skirt WITH POCKETS is a closet staple.
That I myself do not possess.  Sigh.
We hoped for a perfect chambray shirt but instead found a chambray shirt/dress/tunic!
It's a little short to be a dress without tights, even for a 26yo, but it will add tons of versatility to Kristen's wardrobe!
She can wear it belted, open, with tights, or tucked into a skirt!
And the coat - swoon!  Steampunk-ish details, perfect condition "vegan" leather, ruffle hem, knit hood and a fabulous lining!

It was not our day for pants, but who cares.  Kristen looks AH-MAZING in dresses!
Kristen found vintage polka dot perfection, jersey/cotton stripes with a unique ruffled/ruched waistband, the perfect silky shirt-dress with a lower hem in the back and navy print dress!
Black and white tiny polka dot dress in a totally versatile style!
Orange belt?  Yes please!
Mustard scarf and grey moto?  Even yesser!
Shrunken plaid blazer???!!  I can't even...!!!
Then there's the grey sheath dress of awesomeness.
Kristen can style this a hundred ways and never get bored!
We liked it better with the moto cardi than a blazer - the blazer had no edge!  Unacceptable!
That green floral-ish blazer was new-with-tags and will coordinate with EVERYTHING in her closet.
Kristen, be sure to introduce that cardi to your mustard scarf and polka dot dress!

Kristen can style these dresses with leggings or tights and an outer layer for winter, then ditch those layers once warmer weather comes... in a hundred months.  She has an active job, but I assured her (and everyone) that you CAN do most jobs in a dress!  If I can crawl on the floor in preschool in a dress, Kristen can wear dresses to work too!
Kristen did score one pair of printed pants!
Pumps + a dressy shell + blazer make these pants appropriate for casual Friday!
And the sweater on the right, well, it's not for work but she obviously had to have it.
It was meant to be with her own distressed denim and "new" metallic flats!

Kristen got a couple tops including the find of the day - a green/print Free People blouse!
So incredibly cool with denim or her pencil skirts - tucked or untucked, finishing layer or stand alone!
And the top on the right was another unique find - fitted yet stretchy, long enough to wear with leggings or this lace bandage-mini skirt!

The final find of the day was this grey robe cardi...
It was hard not to hug here right then and there... looked so comfortable yet still chic!

Lest anyone thinks this was *all* Kristen could find, here are the pieces she left behind...

I share this because I want the world to know that there are TONS of second-hand stylish pieces in perfect condition for the taking!
The shoes - they're Gap, brand new.  The skirt - Banana Republic, tags on.  Same goes for that black blazer...
I hope Kristen doesn't end up with a case of Thrifter's Regret!

Now that Kristen knows the thrifting ropes, she can pop into the nearest location (a few minutes from here home) and just do a quick browse of a specific section - such as blazers.  Thrifting in small doses is usually manageable even for the most reluctant shopper!

In the end, Kristen scored 40 pieces including accessories, 3 pairs of shoes, 5 belts, 2 scarves, and several wardrobe staples - all for an average cost per piece of $8.27 including my fee!  She had a 30% off stamp card which saved her close to a hundred bucks!  For perspective, her Clarks, Bandolinos and Free People shirt alone would likely retail for more than she spent on all 40 items.  I call that a major thrifting success story!
Kristen, your outside matches your inside - a beautiful, smart, talented, stylish woman!
You will go far!
Thanks for the pleasure of joining your style journey!

Bring Back Black

Though it was easier to go without black in January the second year trying, I was happy to wake up this morning, put on my black undergarments (I went hardcore #BlackOutStyle, man, and avoided black head to toe, inside and out...  There were lots of granny nudes happening, and one disappointed husband), and bring back black into my outfit!  I went hardcore black too, opting for all black, head-to-toe and...... I hated it.
Work bathroom selfie.  AKA too late to do anything about my outfit.
Flashback to me begging my 4yo to take pics...
Blazer $7, Aldo pumps $14 VV Boutique
Icebreaker wool skirt, tights and accessories from my closet

I was going for a layered slouchy look, and added the blazer and classic pumps to get the dressy/casual mix...
But I needed more variety in texture to pull it off properly.

At this point, you can tell by my facial expression that I know I'm in trouble.
No time to change, but hey, I had pockets to hold my phone, stampers and tissues.
Later, I swapped the pumps for my Miz Mooz boots (with texture), the blazer for a relaxed cardi, and added a scarf.
Still not much texture, but at least a consistent vibe.
And my dog approved, though she thought I should add some white and rust for the best look.

Several of my work peeps rocked all black successfully, so I know it can be done!  One of those fashionistas was the winner of the Black Out Style 2015 $50 She Does Create gift certificate, Kristen!  Congratulations Kristen and thanks to you and everyone for giving up black and playing along!
I know!!
I need to go thrifting for black textured pieces!  Fresh out!
